Niagra Falls Road Trip

My cousin Jonathan at Niagara Falls, NY

My cousin Jonathan at Niagara Falls, NY

Two weekends ago, I drove longer than I’ve ever driven before, close to 1000 miles (back and forth), that is to Niagara Falls, NY.

The GPS Navigator literally took my family, friends and I along the scenic route, that is through the mountains, even a few valleys and quaint old towns of Pennsylvania and upstate New York.

Whilst I was excited about the trip (and it was great!), nerd that I am, I was more excited about using my new Canon Powershot G9 camera which has been taking some impressive pictures as of late (thanks to that I’ve read the 200 page manual).

After months of begging, taunts and even jeers, I succumbed to peer pressure and joined the popular Social Network Twitter.

iPod Touch

iPod Touch

I am almost two years late with this purchase but about two weeks ago I went to my local Apple store and bought the popular gizmo that comes along with those ubiquitous white headphones. Yes, the iPod Touch!

I love love love this amazing four ounce device and more particularly what it can do.  Designed by Apple in California and assembled in China, (as inscribed at back) I am finding that I have to grudgingly peel myself away from it on many an occasion.

As I rebuild my once lost music library, Michael W. Smith, LadyGaga, Green Day, U2 and Daughtry are quickly becoming my most listened to musical artists. On a side note, get the new Michael W. Smith album; Deluxe Edition.

On another note, the seasonal fitness buff in me particularly like the Application known as ‘Spinning’  which among other things track the amount of Calories I burn in my almost daily Reaction Cycling class.

Ok, I need to cut this short and get back to work, so I have to summarize this this way: Get one!

Losing my geek stripes

December 22, 2008

I was having a conversation with my 10 year old cousin a couple minutes ago. Here’s how it went. “Your, your, your, um, your white thing is sort of a mini version of my laptop”.

She responds, “you mean my Nintendo DS?” (with a you’re so DUMB look on her face).

I think I’m losing my geek stripes :-(

Folks….please pardon the dust. I’ll be doing some work on my web site over the next couple of days, fixing hyperlinks and adding new features.

In the mean time, I have a new e-mail address! I can now be reached at mail@pharaohsprotege.com.

Be blessed!

Veo Web Cam issue

June 7, 2007

Ever since I purchased my new PC, I’ve been having problems with installing my Veo Web Cam.

I’ve also turned up empty-handed in my search for the drivers that are compatible with Windows Vista.

Veo (the manufacturer) appears to be now defunct also. Help!

From my heart, to yours,
Akhenaton

There are few traditions that are hard for me to break on Saturdays; two of which are listening to one of my favorite radio stations (WGTS 91.9FM) and going to church.

Being away from Maryland (I’m writing from Ohio), you’d think that accomplishing these tasks would have been impossible, right? Wrong!

Thanks to my Treo 700p Smart Phone, I was able to connect my phone to the car’s cigarette lighter and listen to WGTS 91.9 FM while travelling through Pennsylvania and while at my destination (Ohio).

Later in the day, I was able to watch today’s sermon from church. (on the same phone!)

Isn’t that cool?! Well, for fellow Treonauts (i.e. the 7.3 million people who own a Treo Smart Phone) that’s no biggie, but I still think it is just radical how technology can make our world seem so much smaller by the click of a mouse or the tap of an LCD screen.

This is nothing new to the Big Guy up there (speaking of God). He is the pioneer of the ‘technology’ that allows Him to be in touch with what is going on everywhere, whether it be the United States, Iraq, Europe or elsewhere.

The scriptures say that He is ‘omnipresent’, meaning that He is present everywhere… simultaneously!

We all have access to that ‘technology’ today. You see, God dwells in the heart of every living human being on the face of this earth, but the only way for Him to manifest Himself in us is if we call on Him.

The Broadband Connection that allows me to listen to WGTS 91.9fm or watch the sermons from my church right from my Treo phone is always there, but it takes a few steps before I can actually listen or watch…

I pay a monthy subscription to be able to access the aforementioned services, but the technology offered by God is not $10 a month, not even $20 a month, it is free….yes…FREE! I invite you to make use of that technology today.

If you haven’t done so, just ask Him to take control of your life, find a Bible-believing church and a supportive network of friends and I promise you, your life would never be the same.

From my heart, to yours,
Akhenaton

For the past couple weeks my network at home has been pissing me off.

Sundays and Mondays of each week are met with (frequent) unexplained intermittent interruptions in my network connection.

Consulting with the manual for my Belkin Wireless Router left me more confused than anything, so I called customer service for assistance.

Three hours later, the problem remains unresolved. Is it time to switch back to Linksys?

Sprint is superior!

April 23, 2007

A friend of mines just committed the unpardonable sin. She switched from Sprint’s all digital network (with crystal clear calls) to the inferior, ‘statickyTMobile Network. What a travesty!

Sprint has some of the best service plans and since ‘we’ piggy-back on Verizon’s network in a few areas, ‘we’ get coverage anywhere!

Top reasons to switch to/ stay with Sprint

  • Great calling plans which include the Free and Flexible calling Plan that prevents huge overages (i.e. if you go over the minutes in your plan). Other companies charge an average of 40 cents per minute! Sprint charges $5 for every extra 50 minutes, more than $19 in savings!
  • Sprint has the best data plans. For $15 a month, I have unlimited access to data which allows me to watch Television, listen to radio, surf the net, download e-mail and connect to my networks at home and at work from my phone! Comparisons: Verizon starts at $49; Cingular/AT&T starts at $39; T-Mobile: starts at $39.
  • Sprint has the largest wireless Broadband Network that allows you to work, download music, watch live TV and just plain do more in more places – all ‘wirelessly’ and all at broadband speeds!

Told you Sprint is superior! :)

The tale of my Dell 4600C PC (now deceased)

Last week my PC decided that she did not want to power up. I pressed the power button, nothing happened, I unplugged and and re-inserted the power cable, nothing. I did the classic thump on the side….nothing (I guess that only works on old-model tv’s). So I decided to call Dell Tech Support.

After more than 45 minutes on the phone with a tech-support agent, I was told that I needed a new power supply. So I ordered a power supply unit for my PC, paying almost the cost of the unit in shipping so that I can get it the next day.

When the power supply arrived, I took out the old and installed the new one. This time, when I pressed the power button, the computer came on, but my monitor was not receiving a signal! Ugh! Ugh! Ugh!

So I call Dell tech support again, to see if I can get some advice on this. Afer 30 minutes on hold, then 50 minutes of trouble-shooting, the agent told me that I needed a new mother board. My mother who!? When he said that, it was almost like he cursed me. I wanted to use my PC…..NOW!

Because of the specifications of my PC (which is not typical of other PCs in terms of size and features) I have to take her to a technician. Luckily I have a laptop that I can use in the interim, but I still miss her for her speed and efficiency.

Last week, my plan was to by this weekend, be enjoying the features of Windows Vista; not looking for a repair shop that would reasonably repair her because she just wants to be a stubborn %^&$

Women! I tell you! hmph! :)

Palm…..Just cant do without her!

ABC’s Good Morning America (FMI) is currently looking for people who are willing to live a week without their cellphone or some other modern convenience. (read more)

A co-worker, when she saw this asked me if I was willing to sign up. She was very persistent, but I declined.

“Carla, (name changed) I know, for a fact that I cannot survive a day without my cellphone, much less a week!”

She reminded me of that time I forgot it home. I left the office early that day to go get it. I figured it might be lonely; but before you label me a freak, I did have 12 missed calls, 8 text messages, e-mail galore and 5 new v-mails!

That however, made me realize how dependent I am on my cellphone (referred to as Palm hereafter).

“But you see, Palm is not just a cellphone…” (I was telling her). It is my alarm clock on mornings; at 7 o’clock each morning, it downloads the latest news headlines, weather and other important information that I need to know for the day.

If I have any appointments for the day, or if there are any upcoming birthdays/ anniversaries, it reminds me of them and automatically downloads my personal and business email every 30 minutes.

Palm is also my mp3 player where I (currently) have a selection of 23 albums that I can listen to while on the road or in the gym; she’s also my television. I can watch live tv on her!

Palm, on the most part eliminates my need for a laptop while on the road since on her, I can easily access and edit excel, word and pdf documents. Her voice guided navigation feature though tops it off.

The aforementioned, among other things is what makes Palm so important to me.
That said, can I survive a week without her? Um….NOPE!
