After a botched performance at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, many have concluded that all hope is lost for a comeback for Britney Spears.

I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the troubled pop star. Her debut album Baby One More Time was the first I’ve ever owned and it remains one of my favorites.

A recent poll on CNN’s Showbiz Tonight asked if after her “disaster” performance on Sunday, her career was over. 47% of the respondents said yes.

What if God did the same thing to write us off every time we make a big oops like Britney Spears? What if the assurance of salvation was written off every time we made a big (or small) oops?!
We are privileged to have a God who is merciful and loving enough to forgive us and give us a fresh start when we mess up.

1 John 1:9

But if we confess our sins to God, he can always be trusted to forgive us and take our sins away.

I listened to, for the first time, Rihanna’s latest album ‘Good girl gone bad’ this morning.

While the album lacks in terms of originality, (albeit that’s the case for most newer albums) she does what few entertainers manage to pull off by showcasing versatility by compacting several genres of music into a single CD.
On ‘Good girl gone bad’, you will find a clever mix of Dance, Pop, Caribbean, Hip Hop and R&B rhythms. I even found that some of the songs are sedatory enough for me to use in my yoga routines.

From all appearances, her intention was to reach all audiences- and she does a great job at it too!

So how do I rate her latest installment? I’ll give her 3.5 stars out of 5. Would I recommend it? I certainly will.

This Saturday, tickets go on sale for my future ex-wife’s US Tour and to my delight, she’s coming to DC on August 9th!

She certainly did not disappoint in the Destiny Child’s Destiny Fulfilled farewell tour that I attended a couple years ago and I look forward to nothing but a stellar performance when she comes to DC.
The “Beyonce Experience” concert will showcase the international music and film star, along with her sizzling all-female band, performing musical hits, classics, and surprises in a newly-created high-tech state-of-the-art concert environment.

Sanjaya Malakar, 17 of American Idol is a guy of many fabulous hairstyles, an infectious smile and a wonderful personality; he is a doll! Judge Paula Abdul describes him as the “sweet, charming kid” and has used this to capture the hearts of millions of Americans.

In spite of his winning personality and all the other mushy mushy stuff, why is he the American Idol that America loves but hates to love? Many are of the opinion that he can’t sing!

There are those, for good reason who believe that charm is simply not enough to make it in a singing competition. There is building momentum even to speed up him being kicked to the curb. Fox News (yawn) last week reported that one person is even willing to risk starvation by going on a hunger strike until he is voted off!

So what’s keeping this brother from being voted off each week, basically taking him closer and closer to being crowned the next American Idol?

Fellow blogger KDixit credits “the call centers in South Asia for rerouting the calls in favor of Sanjaya” and of course, the American entrepreneurs who have their call centers there. Clever thinking isn’t it? Unnerving even, because it could actually be true!

Like him or not, Sanjaya, like Paris Benet of last season who added the charm factor to American Idol, will run out of steam eventually. To be charming just isn’t enough to sell records. Hopefully, sooner than later, America (and South Asia) would realize this and start voting for more worthy contestants.

Watch American Idol Tuesdays and Wednesdays on FOX. Remember: cool people watch American Idol!

My favorite contestants are Gina Glocksen, Lakisha Jones and Chris Richardson and Blake Lewis.

Brief Movie Reviews

…AINT STOMPING IN MY YARD
Brief Movie Reviews

The movie ‘Stomp the Yard’ to me is nothing but a cheap makeover of You Got Served and does nothing to help dilute the (self-inflicted*) racial stereo-types of black America.
What ever happened to black movies that in the least attempted to break new ground like Blade Trinity or Roots ?
LIGHT IN THE TUNNEL…
Dreamgirls, although not an original in its strictest sense, raised the bar (which perhaps had no other way to go than up) and was followed closely by the Pursuit of Happiness. The Pursuit of Happiness was great even though the story was annoyingly over-stretched .
Of movie-makers, the quality of recent ‘black’ movies is the greatest sign of their lack. Innovativeness is too often starved for the sake of making a quick buck.
Dreamgirls and The Pursuit of Happiness were perhaps the only two black movies worth seeing.
