Time flies when you’re having fun doesn’t it? I’ve been doing some great and yes, fun stuff over the past few weeks. This has included (among other things) helping plan and facilitate US Presidential Campaign Events, volunteering at a Homeless Shelter in Washington, DC and regularly going to the gym.

While what I’ve been doing has churned out many positive outcomes, I may have, in the midst of it all been simultaneously pushing away some of the pillars that have kept me in fine fettle over the years. I have in many respects lived an imbalanced life over the past few weeks.

Testimony to that imbalance is the frequency of late of not-so-pleasant phone calls from loved ones who have not been hearing from me as often as before or complaints from others who just cannot seem to get much of my attention anymore.

An important lesson I am learning and hope to take away from this is that even in the process of doing good, I can do harm, harm to what yet remains one of the most important needs that I have as a member of the human species- the need for relationships. No matter how much satisfaction I find in doing good, there is nothing that can substitute the laughter, encouragement, joy and fulfillment that comes from having a close connection with those that I love.

The bad news, one author said, is that time flies. The good news is that I can be the pilot if I want to. My hope over the next few days is to get back into the pilot seat and steer my life back in the direction that allows for greater flexibility so as to not isolate those that I care deeply about.
