Rest in Peace Benazir Bhutto
December 27, 2007
It was with sadness that I received the news of the Assassination of Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Bhutto had an extraordinary career. In the overwhelmingly male-dominated Muslim world, Bhutto fought against the odds and became the first woman to lead a Muslim nation in the 1980′s. To me that was remarkable.
Up until her life was tragically taken, Bhutto’s life-story spoke of courage, determination and strength even in the face of unrelenting adversity.
In spite of all the challenges that she faced (the first being a woman in a Muslim country) Bhutto stood her ground and remained steadfast in her beliefs, even described as being “stubborn” at times. She earned my respect for this.
Bhutto is a martyr for all women who continue to struggle against the tide of bigotry that exists in the extremist application of the Islamic and other faiths.
She is a hero, one that the people of Pakistan should be proud of. May we emulate the great qualities that made her the great leader that she was.
May she rest in Peace.

In 2008…dial 1-1-9
December 27, 2007
I remember the first time I had to dial 9-1-1*. It was not for anything serious; it was just to get the police to come out to the scene of a minor (very minor) vehicular accident that the taxi I was traveling in was involved in.
This was soon after I moved to the United States. I remember feeling a bit nervous. I was quite a timid guy at the time. I did not know how to express myself saving and except the vernacular that had been woven into my being after having lived in the Caribbean for more than 17 years.
As I look into the Crystal Ball of my life, beyond the midnight of December 31 of 2007, many things remain constant. Among other things, bills will become du
e, I will still have to get out of bed at 6:50 on mornings, attend church on weekends and go to the gym.
My hope is to enter 2008 not so stationary, but to build on what I am blessed with and moreover bless others with what I am blessed with.
As I approach this New Year, I do not want to be so dependent on or trusting of 9-1-1.
I want to dial another number in 2008; and as I continue to grow (in faith), find the need to dial that other number less often. That (other) number is 1-1-9 or 1 John 1:9 which says “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”.
It is my desire that I would start the new year by dialing 1-1-9. Yes I (we) may have messed up time and time again in 2007, yes I (we) may mess up in the new year, but God’s grace IS sufficient!
When I (we) dial 1-1-9 I (we) will experience breakthroughs!
When (we) I dial 1-1-9, I (we) will experience peace!
As the time draws near to 2008, my eyes will be set on the Maker of the mountains I can’t climb and the Calmer of the oceans raging wild, with blind faith, dialing 1-1-9.
I want to in 2008 fully embrace His love, supplemented by my obedience to His will. I pray that you feel the same or will feel the same one day.
My prayer is that 2008 will bring for you increasingly, abundantly more than you could ever ask or imagine. May you forever bask in the glow of the Heavenly Father as you open your hearts to receive His grace as it flows down on you in 2008. Happy New Year!

HELP! 2.5 million lives at stake…
December 14, 2007
What would you do if you knew that you could help save 2.5 million lives?
Colleen Connors of the Save Darfur Coalition in her weekly email highlighted that Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir is backtracking on his government’s agreements that could help put an end to the Darfur Genocide.
Connors says, (and I couldn’t agree with her more) that al-Bashir’s obstruction must be stopped and it is up to world leaders, including President Bush to stop him.
Please take a few minutes to spread the word about the Darfur Genocide to your friends, family and co-workers. 2.5 million people are counting on you and I to do this. Click here to spread the word.

A fresh start…
December 7, 2007
Yesterday I ran into former Heavyweight Boxer Thomas ‘Top Dawg’ Williams. We had a lengthy conversation about his rise to fame in the 1990′s and fall in mid-2000 when he was sentenced to 15 months in prison for throwing a fight in Las Vegas.
“I have many regrets” he said, while quickly pointing to that he has been given a new lease on life. He spoke about telling God that He did not need Him during his time of fame and fortune. When everything was taken away, he realized his need for a loving and forgiving savior. Williams gave his life to Christ and asked for forgiveness.
Most admirable is Williams’ gratitude for his ‘valley moment’. He “needed it” so that he could “come to his senses” and has been living his life for the Creator and Sustainer of all things since then. He now coaches boxing at a Boys and Girls Club in Western Maryland.
From my heart, to yours,

Thomas ‘Top Dawg’ Williams was born June 30, 1960 in Washington, DC. His boxing record includes 28 wins with more than 19 knockouts and 17 Losses.

A short while ago, I received an email from a friend who was curious about the Save Darfur Coalition (web site). This prompted me to make another appeal for your help in ending the Darfur Crisis.
Many are not aware of the genocide that is taking place in Darfur right now and our leaders do not seem to care that as many as 400,000 people have been killed thus far.
You and I can help end the genocide by taking small steps that can make a big difference for the people of Darfur. One of the most effective ways to end the suffering in Darfur is by offering the tools necessary to take further action.

I am offering you this Wristband because I believe that it can serve as a visible declaration of your desire to bring an end to the violence and atrocities in Darfur. Moreover, the band will further awareness and education efforts by stimulating conversation on the crisis.
