In the mean time, I have a new e-mail address! I can now be reached at mail@pharaohsprotege.com.

My talking points on Jena 6

September 21, 2007

A little background on Jena 6
On December 4, 2006, a Caucasian Jena High School student was assaulted by six fellow (African American) students. The six students were subsequently arrested and charged for this crime. There were many critics on how the case was handled, including, but not limited to Civil Rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson who is of the opinion that the arrests and subsequent charges were racially motivated.

My talking points on Jena 6
  • Jena 6 is not the best mold to highlight racial disparities in our Judicial System, more so given that the 6 teenagers did in fact commit a crime. Civil Rights leaders should however, continue to cease the moment to highlight that there are in fact racial disparities in our Judicial System.
  • Even though the possibility exists that the arrests and charges against these teenagers were racially motivated, there still exists, the cloud over their heads which is that they brutally attacked another teen.
  • There could and never would be any justification for violence against another person.
  • Notwithstanding that the charges in this case are excessive, it would be a greater miscarriage of justice if the six teenagers were to be immediately “freed” (as is being advocated). A crime was committed and justice that is impartial, rational and nondiscriminatory has to and must be (eventually) served.
  • Jena six is more than a Caucasian American and African American issue. It is bigger than our Judicial System. It is bigger than that small town of about three thousand in Louisiana.
  • Jena six is echoed on the streets of Iraq where sectarian violence has resulted in the deaths of thousands; Jena six is echoed in the deserts of Darfur where the cry for help has been largely ignored by most world leaders; Jena six is echoed on the streets of the United States every time racial profiling is used by the authorities and ordinary citizens alike.
  • Christians (and Muslims alike) must not sit idly by while grave injustices continue to exist in our society today. Too many Saturday and Sunday mornings have passed by with little or no mention or call for action in response to the atrocities in Darfur, the sectarian violence in Iraq and other issues of the day.
  • We are called to take the lead in speaking and fighting against discrimination, racism and injustices. The Christian church must NOT allow history to repeat itself when she sat idly by during the (Jewish) Holocaust.
  • Desegregating our Saturday and Sunday morning worship services is a great start- another topic to be discussed another time.

At the end of the day, we need to stand up for what is just, to fight for those who cannot fight themselves. Jesus said “I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.” Matthew 25:40

Flip Flop Gospel

September 15, 2007

Many people have issues with them, but I love love love flip flops! They’re so comfortable!

Yesterday, I completely ignored the weather guy’s prediction that it would rain and wore a pair of flip flops. I took the risk just for the sake of being comfortable.

Now, I do not have to tell you what my feet felt like when it did actually rain later that day. Suffice to say, I was not happy at all.

This makes me think about the times that we sacrifice our happiness, a peace of mind and even the opportunity to love and be loved because we are afraid to step out of our comfort zones.

TD Jakes in his book Reposition yourself:
You can have a better life. The question is, are you willing to fight for it? Like an alcoholic recovering from the throes of his addiction, are you willing to fight the urge to settle for less and to endure the hard work required to reposition yourself? My friend, the time has never been better for you to wake up to the impact that you create in the world around you and to own the responsibility to break your addiction to apathy and unleash the passion of your life without limits.

WGTS 91.9fm = Church

September 13, 2007

A couple hours ago I was reminded about how important the ministry of WGTS 91.9fm is. There is a vendor who stands at one of the exits of Washington, DC’s Union Station almost every day.

If you happen to be in the area, you would see him dancing, with tambourine in hand, singing the songs played on WGTS 91.9fm, coming from his battery powered radio.

Next to him today was a homeless woman, sitting on the floor, shaking her head in unison with the music.

WGTS 91.9fm = Church….How?
  • The few seconds that it takes to pass by that gentleman playing WGTS 91.9fm is the only time that thousands of passersby might actually hear about Jesus.
  • The songs played on WGTS that some of the employees at my office hum (and sing) is often the only praise songs they would ever sing and the closest they would get to a church.
  • And yes, it gets personal! WGTS 91.9fm was the last strand that kept me faithful when I was borderline atheist for more than two years.

WGTS 91.9fm is a ‘church’ for thousands….no, not just thousands, hundreds of thousands and with a potential listenership of six million…I cannot emphasize enough how valuable this ministry is.

So why am I ranting about WGTS 91.9fm?

After a botched performance at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, many have concluded that all hope is lost for a comeback for Britney Spears.

I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the troubled pop star. Her debut album Baby One More Time was the first I’ve ever owned and it remains one of my favorites.

A recent poll on CNN’s Showbiz Tonight asked if after her “disaster” performance on Sunday, her career was over. 47% of the respondents said yes.

What if God did the same thing to write us off every time we make a big oops like Britney Spears? What if the assurance of salvation was written off every time we made a big (or small) oops?!
We are privileged to have a God who is merciful and loving enough to forgive us and give us a fresh start when we mess up.

1 John 1:9

But if we confess our sins to God, he can always be trusted to forgive us and take our sins away.

From my heart, to yours,

Today I took my dad on a tour of Washington, DC- beautiful city! Afterwards, we chilled out on the steps of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial while the sun set. Below are some of the photos I took.
