I just finished watching the movie Freedom Writers, a true story that chronicled the life journeys of 150 troubled students of a California School and their teacher’s deeply rooted passion for her profession.

I was awe stricken by the determination of Erin Gruwell, the teacher in this great story (her role brilliantly played by Hilary Swank).

She was met with great resistance (initially) from her students, the school’s administration and her husband (which lead to the eventual loss of her marriage).

Notwithstanding her misfortunes, she was determined to help break the cycle of violence and despair that threatened the futures of her students.

Freedom Writers is a great story about determination and heroism. Gruwell’s determination resulted in the mass conversion of 150 students from dispirited delinquents who were simply waiting for that moment where they would become pregnant or killed as a result of gang violence to motivated High School graduates who are now attending college.

After watching the movie, my veneration for those who make sacrifices for the sake of bettering the lives of others was significantly amplified.

Christopher Reeve:

“When the first Superman movie came out I was frequently asked “What is a hero?” …My answer was that a hero is someone who commits a courageous action without considering the consequences… Now my definition is completely different. I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.”

From my heart, to yours,
Akhenaton
