Remembering Princes Diana

August 31, 2007

July 01 1961 – August 31, 1997
…and it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
never fading with the sunset
when the rain set in
and your footsteps will always fall here
along England’s greenest hills
your candle’s burned out long before
your legend ever will

Can we prevent tragedies?

August 30, 2007

Today’s poll on CNN.com asks the question “Can tragedies like the mass killings at Virginia Tech be prevented?”.

I really struggled for a while on if I should select YES or NO because there is no short or right answer to that question.

YES-Future tragedies can be prevented with greater vigilance

NO- No one can predict what’s going to happen in the future

Freedom Writers Diary

August 28, 2007

Each and every one of us has the potential for greatness. The book ‘Freedom Writers Diary’ solidifiess that already proven, but hardly known fact. This thought-provoking narrative, penned by 150 teens and their teacher took me for a ride on one of the wildest emotional roller coasters ever.

While the intent was that the Freedom Writers would recount their own life stories, they ended up telling stories that eerily resonated with the life stories of many people I’ve come in contact with over my life time.

The book was also personal to me as I identified with some of the experiences of some of the freedom writers myself.

Below is one of the diary entries that stood out for me.

“…a truly self-reliant person takes action, leaving nothing to chance and everything to themselves …excuses will not bring about success and adversity is not something you walk with, but something you leap over. The only obstacles are the ones you allow. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. A truly self-reliant person finds his weak link and strenghtens it. I want to be a self-reliant person, now and forever.”

Whose fight is it anyway?

August 27, 2007

It can be exhilarating eh? I’m talking about fighting the battles that life throws at us with our own strength.

What’s your strategy? Do you throw your fists aimlessly, hoping that you would hit your target or curl up on the floor without putting up a fight?

When the bills come and you do not have any money to pay them what do you do? How about when you are tempted to get revenge? What do you do when faced with adversity?

“…do not be afraid or discouraged because of this… for the battle is not yours, but God’s”

Child sponsorship

August 17, 2007

I couldn’t help but blow the trumpet about this beautiful photo I got in the mail today of Obeth, one of my sponsored children.
She’s a cutie, isn’t she?! Obeth is 7 and lives in Honduras.
Sponsoring precious gems like Obeth is a joy and there are many other needy kids who need sponsors; do you mind filling in the gap?

Where was God?!

August 15, 2007

Yesterday, a non-Christian friend asked me where was God in the tragedies of the bridge collapse in Minnesota and the more recent coal mine collapse in Utah. Even as a Christian, I’ve asked myself that question several times, especially when innocent lives are lost.

These tragedies, I understand serve as reminders for me (and you) about how fragile life can be and how important it is to live a morally and spiritually upright life at all times. In a split second, our lives or the life of a loved one can be taken away from us- without warning.

While the question of where is/was God in the midst of tragedies is a legitimate one, we should not use it as an excuse for turning our backs on Him; it in fact, should serve as a catalyst for renewing our faith in Him.

Headache

August 12, 2007

Last night I had headache, a splitting headache and it’s for one of the reasons I get down on one of my friends: not eating.

Ever had so busy a day that you forgot to eat? That was me yesterday. Typically I would not miss a meal, but I just did not have the time to stop to grab a bite.

It is so easy for us to get carried away by the matters of this world, so much so that we forget the basic things in life. Yesterday, I forgot to eat!

Benjamin Franklin:

“Never leave that ’til tomorrow which you can do today.”

Help save WGTS 91.9FM

August 7, 2007

In September, Christian-owned WGTS 91.9FM, located in suburban Maryland (USA) will be sold to the highest bidder which as of late is a secular entity. Around 25 million dollars is being offered for WGTS 91.9FM, the second largest non-commercial Christian radio station in the country.

When sold, WGTS will likely become a secular radio station. Selling WGTS would mean the loss of a priceless ministry that has a potential listenership of over 6 million in the Maryland/DC/ Virginia area and countless others around the world.

What would the sale of WGTS mean for (the potential) millions who need a bridge to Christendom and a source of hope and encouragement at a time when it is needed now more than ever?! (40% of listeners to WGTS are unchurched)

Please join the FIGHT (yes! this is a fight!) to save OUR radio station by expressing your displeasure with this by writing to the parties who are negotiating this sale.

Send emails to comments@cuc.edu and copy to wgts@wgts919.com to encourage them.

For more information about WGTS and to listen online, visit www.wgts919.com and www.savewgts.net

I just finished watching the movie Freedom Writers, a true story that chronicled the life journeys of 150 troubled students of a California School and their teacher’s deeply rooted passion for her profession.

I was awe stricken by the determination of Erin Gruwell, the teacher in this great story (her role brilliantly played by Hilary Swank).

She was met with great resistance (initially) from her students, the school’s administration and her husband (which lead to the eventual loss of her marriage).

Notwithstanding her misfortunes, she was determined to help break the cycle of violence and despair that threatened the futures of her students.

Freedom Writers is a great story about determination and heroism. Gruwell’s determination resulted in the mass conversion of 150 students from dispirited delinquents who were simply waiting for that moment where they would become pregnant or killed as a result of gang violence to motivated High School graduates who are now attending college.

After watching the movie, my veneration for those who make sacrifices for the sake of bettering the lives of others was significantly amplified.

Christopher Reeve:

“When the first Superman movie came out I was frequently asked “What is a hero?” …My answer was that a hero is someone who commits a courageous action without considering the consequences… Now my definition is completely different. I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.”

It’s rather uncanny (to me at least) that the Republicans are hosting a forum today, Sunday at 10am. Why do I find it to be weird? More than half of Republicans profess to be born-again Christians (as compared to just over 35% of Democrats)

Where are most Christians on Sundays at 10am? You guessed it right…at church! So why would the Republican Party host a forum at 10 o’clock on a Sunday morning…..on the ‘Lord’s day’?!

Of late, I’ve seen a surprising shift in the Republican party when it comes to value support (i.e. support of candidates based on their ‘moral’ values).

Republican George W. Bush, in the 2004 Presidential election was the professed anti gay marriage, anti-abortion and pro family values candidate; 80% of value voters supported him because of his stance on those issues.

Fast forward to today; Rudolph Giuliani, the leading 2008 Republican Presidential Candidate supports gay rights, abortion and is thrice divorced. Yet, he is their leading candidate!

Are we seeing the end of the Republican Party being the political pawn of right wing/conservative Christians?

H. L. Mencken:

In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican.
