I learned today that one of the children that I sponsor from Honduras (Josselyn) cannot be located. It appears as though her family, without notice, moved to a new area.

The sad truth in Honduras is that in a community like the one she lived in, poverty often dictates that families move frequently to find better employment or even the smallest opportunity to improve life.

Because efforts to find her and her family have been unsuccessful, I was given the opportunity to sponsor another precious child from the same community.

Meet Obeth (pictured), she is 5 and loves to sing, dance and play with dolls. She lives with her mother who makes $137 a month as a factory worker in a city called San Pedro Sula in Honduras.

It brings me great joy to sponsor Obeth, however this is still a bitter-sweet moment. Please keep Josselyn and her family in your prayers.

UPDATE: JUNE 29, 2007. I spoke with one of the field workers yesterday and it was her understanding that Josselyn was abandoned by her family. As of today, there is no word as to where she is. Please keep her in your prayers. To the right is her picture.

In order to get to the top of a crowded escalator, there is one unpleasantry that we have to face: BUTTS! Yes, you heard it right. On crowded escalators, we come face to ‘face’ with the big, sometimes HUGE, the round and the flat behinds of people; most of whom are strangers!

I found an important life lesson in this. On the journey to the top, at one point or the other, (and sometimes for a while), we will have to deal with unpleasant people and unpleasant situations before we reach the top of our escalators.

With God’s help, there is no need to worry or fret about these unpleasantries though. Our victories or successes are inevitable, getting to the top of the escalator is inevitable! Through Christ, and our faith in Him, we are heirs to the blessings of Abraham.
We are promised that if we lend an ear to God’s commands, He will make us the head and not the tail; and we will always have the highest place. (Deuteronomy 28:13)

Today, three-time Grammy nominee Jewel will be here in DC. She is here to petition Congress for increased funding for homeless youth. This will be at a hearing on designating November the ‘National Homeless Youth Awareness Month’.

Jewel, who was on one of the local morning shows today, spoke about her life as a homeless teenager, living out of her car.

Jewel, I believe was lucky to have a car. This may not be the same for the more than one million youth who are currently living without homes in the United States today.

Good guidance there

June 14, 2007

Have you ever gotten lost, bought the wrong product from a store or did something that turned out disastrous just because someone left out a minor detail?
There’s the story about a mother who took her kids to the park one afternoon.

While she read a book, her kids played at the far end of the park.

After reading a couple chapters, she went over to see what they were doing. What she saw nearly made her drop. They were playing…WITH SKUNKS!

Mortified, she shouted “RUN!!!” The unexpected happened; they picked up the skunks and ran!

A couple years ago, a female friend asked me to pick up some female stuff (pads) for her at the local store. I picked up the first thing that I saw that looked like pads; I discovered later that it was a box of panty liners!

We are all amateurs in the journey of our lives. In our journeys, we will always come across things that just do not make sense. What should we do then when we just do not know what to do?

The Bible says, ‘ask and you will find out…’ (Matthew 7:7). It’s really as simple as that. My High School Math teacher at the end of every lesson would say, “if you do not understand, just ask…”.

Psalm 110:105 says, ‘Thy word (the Bible), is a light; I can use it to light the path of my life journey.’
Truth be told, there is an answer in the Bible for every issue that we face today. No matter what it is! Check out what the Bible says on different topics here.

A couple months ago, after years of intense debate, astronomers resolved that Pluto would no longer be considered to be a planet. Pluto was demoted.

Do you feel like Pluto sometimes? Demoted? There are many times in my life when I’ve felt as though I was short-changed or treated unfairly.

I remember I was disqualified one year from a race at my Elementary School’s Sports Day because I started off a few seconds before everyone else. I was angry! Yea, really angry because I spent a great deal of time practicing for this race.

There are many things in life that just do not seem fair at first glance. Perhaps you have been demoted at work or even overlooked when it came to that promotion you really wanted. Perhaps you did not get into the school you wanted to go to or failed a major exam.

There was a time when I had to take a steep pay cut at one of the companies I worked for. It was a trying moment. For a couple months, I did not have the luxury of shopping without looking at price tags. It was tough and seemed unfair at the time because I was no longer in my financial comfort zone.

God, from time to time, allows for us to be kicked off our pedestals or out of our comfort zones just so that we could get that much needed reality check; just so that we could get a better appreciation for who and what really matters.

If you are going through a Pluto moment right now, don’t catch a fit; you’re probably experiencing that down time because you need it!

Every Pluto, every misstep in your life is divinely orchestrated to prepare you for better things to come! Matthew 5:12 says: in times of trouble, rejoice and be glad because you have a great reward in heaven waiting for you!

I listened to, for the first time, Rihanna’s latest album ‘Good girl gone bad’ this morning.

While the album lacks in terms of originality, (albeit that’s the case for most newer albums) she does what few entertainers manage to pull off by showcasing versatility by compacting several genres of music into a single CD.
On ‘Good girl gone bad’, you will find a clever mix of Dance, Pop, Caribbean, Hip Hop and R&B rhythms. I even found that some of the songs are sedatory enough for me to use in my yoga routines.

From all appearances, her intention was to reach all audiences- and she does a great job at it too!

So how do I rate her latest installment? I’ll give her 3.5 stars out of 5. Would I recommend it? I certainly will.

Today, temperatures in the DC area will feel like 102 degrees Fahrenheit (36 degrees Celsius).

On days like this, I’ve always wondered what it’s like for Muslim women who adhere to the strict dress codes of their faith.

I do not know however, how appropriate it is for me to approach and ask them this question without violating their privacy or compromising their security.

So I’m putting the question out there on the blogosphere to Muslim women. Is it uncomfortable to wear those outfits in hot weather?

To my surprise, while checking out the Personals in a local newspaper (just for amusement), I came across a page dedicated to Senior Citizens looking for love.

One ad by a 64 year old grandmother of 6 said: “I have a few dents and dings, but the motor still runs”.

Just out of curiosity, I googled ‘online dating for seniors’ and found a number of web sites dedicated exclusively to seniors, including seniordatingexchange.com and seniorpassion.com.

It seems as though online dating for seniors is growing in popularity too. Steven Slon, editor of AARP magazine, who has been tracking the online dating scene, found that the biggest growth area among online dating web sites (such as eharmony.com) is among seniors.

If you are not married by, lets say, 30, what’s your cut off age for dating? At what age would you feel comfortable enough to settle for a dog or cat as your companion? Do you have a cut off age at all?

This brings me to today’s poll….

Veo Web Cam issue

June 7, 2007

Ever since I purchased my new PC, I’ve been having problems with installing my Veo Web Cam.

I’ve also turned up empty-handed in my search for the drivers that are compatible with Windows Vista.

Veo (the manufacturer) appears to be now defunct also. Help!

I’ve just finished watching the documentary ‘Deliver us from evil’ by Filmmaker Amy Berg.

This unsettling documentary, according to the description, investigated “the life of 30-year pedophile Father Oliver O’Grady” while exposing the “corruption inside the Catholic Church that allowed him (and other clergy) to abuse countless children.”

The film revealed some startling statistics including that there are more than 100,000 known victims of (Catholic) clergy sexual abuse in the United States alone.

More alarming is that more than 80% of all sexual abuse victims never report their abuse, so the actual number will actually be significantly more.

The sexual abuse problem is not unique to the Roman Catholic Church; sadly, it crosses denominational lines. Statistics actually show that the prevalence is greater among Protestant churches.

Let us pray for reconciliation for those who were abused (emotionally, physicalky, sexually or otherwise) at the hands of the church.

Purpose, not Problem

June 3, 2007

I’d been looking at a lid (pictured to the left) on my desk for the better half of the day today, wondering where it came from.

Just as I was about to toss it in the trash, I remembered that I had put most of my jewelry in a container filled with jewelry cleaning solution this morning. That’s when I figured out the purpose of that lid.

I couldn’t help but reminisce on those days at the dinner table as a kid with my dad trying to coerce me into eating the vegetables that were on my plate. Their purpose? “To make you big and strong” he would say.
The problems that we encounter on our life journeys actually serve the same purpose as the vegetables, that is, to make us ‘big and strong’.
God does not cause the problems that we face, but He allows them to happen. James 1:2-4 shows us that these problems serve the purpose of making us stronger.

Verses 2-4 say: “when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”

So, if you are going through a tough time right now, look at it as an opportunity to grow. Focus not so much on the problem, but on that it serves a purpose in your life.
You may not find out the purpose right away (or you may not figure it out at all), but if you persevere until the end, it is promised that you will be made perfect and complete, needing nothing.

Just remember that all things that happen in our lives (good or bad) are divinely orchestrated-for a purpose! Every lid in your life fits with a container that has something valuable in it.

This morning, I almost freaked out! Somehow, during the course of the night, my eye-glasses magically (yes….magically!) made it to my bed from my night stand.

When I reached out to hit the snooze button on my alarm clock, I felt an object, under my butt. It was my eyeglasses, minus one of it’s hinges!
Now, with my contact lenses still on their way to me (by mail), I had to act quickly. Without my contacts or eyeglasses, I might as well not leave my bedroom. (Yea, I’m that dependent on them!)
Using a Krazy Glue stick, I pasted some glue where the hinge had broken off and left it to bind.
Ten minutes later, my eyeglasses was like new- couldn’t tell that it was in pieces just a few minutes earlier.
How about you today? Are you like my eyeglasses earlier today- broken? Are there hinges in your life that are broken? Perhaps your emotional, mental or physical hinges are broken.

If that’s you today, why not give it to the Almighty Father. His Krazy Glue can fix every broken hinge in your life; all you have to do is ask Him.

His plan is to prosper you and to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11), So give Him your broken hinges today and you will experience peace.
His Krazy glue worked on me, it can work on you!
