Brief Movie Reviews
The movie ‘Stomp the Yard’ to me is nothing but a cheap makeover of You Got Served and does nothing to help dilute the (self-inflicted*) racial stereo-types of black America.
What ever happened to black movies that in the least attempted to break new ground like Blade Trinity or Roots ?
LIGHT IN THE TUNNEL…
Dreamgirls, although not an original in its strictest sense, raised the bar (which perhaps had no other way to go than up) and was followed closely by the Pursuit of Happiness. The Pursuit of Happiness was great even though the story was annoyingly over-stretched .
Of movie-makers, the quality of recent ‘black’ movies is the greatest sign of their lack. Innovativeness is too often starved for the sake of making a quick buck.
Dreamgirls and The Pursuit of Happiness were perhaps the only two black movies worth seeing.

Hahaha, I like how you clump Roots right in there with that bastion of quality film-making, Blade Trinity! But this is a really good post. You point out an interesting trend of crappy movies, although I’m not sure it’s only limited to African American films. I mean, Bring it On 2 sucked, too. I think a lot of it is just the repeated pumping of an already-tired genre, trying to make a quick dollar off of stupid kids who like to watch other stupid kids dance.
